Read the sample and enjoyed Kane's writing style enough to purchase the whole; ultimately would rate this a solid 3.5 book. The plot is fresh and some of the darkest elements are deftly presented. Most importantly, multiple characters are developed in varying shades of gray, both light and dark. At times the timeline shifts caught me off guard, making the plot pacing seem choppy for both storylines. Further, the past/base plotline characters were significantly better developed than any in the present day.I would recommend this book to fans of suspense & thriller novels, especially those who feel like they keep finding repetitive plots within this genre. At the same time, I didn't enjoy the characters enough to ever consider re-reading this book or continuing on with the series. Other readers may dislike the presentation of sensitive content (see below). In my case, it engendered distaste for a character. Lastly, Kane packed so many twists in the book, easily 25% of them felt rushed or incomplete.
Fair warning & slight spoiler, if storylines involving child molestation & sexual manipulation are unpleasant reads, you will want to skip this one. I do find Kane's presentation of these matters plausible; I just didn't enjoy the character progression.

A fantastic read from start to finish. Once started,I could not put it down before I knew how it ended. I highly recommend this book.

One of the best books I've read in a long time!! It kept me on the edge of good and evil...a must read for anybody that likes to blur the line or just wonders what it would be like!
One of the best books I've read in a while. Ellery Kane is one of my new favorite authors and can't wait for her next novel. This one was a page Turner, can't put down novel. Interesting characters-never a dull moment! So glad I came upon this author!
This is an interesting story, but a bit hard to follow. It's suspenseful and full of twists and the characters are intriguing. While being a little hard to follow, it was also hard to put down.

The beginning of the book drew me in right away. Very easy to get into, and anxious to see what would happen. All the back and forth was at times confusing. I felt like you were given glimpses of the "real" Clare but she wasn't allowed to be fully realized in the book. There was also a timeline issue near the end. It stated, "the day after I _________, I went back to San Quentin." The problem is one of those occurred in 1996 and the other is present day, so there's a major issue there. I don't feel like this book met its full potential. Disappointed
I am giving this book a solid 4 stars. The characters of Claire and Clive were fascinating. While the part of the story about Claire's daughter and the young male cop was necessary, it lagged in comparison. (Mercifully, that part didn't blossom into a teen-romance story to gum up a juicy dark drama.) The author did a great job of building suspense with Claire, then abruptly jumping into the parts about her daughter, which left me wanting more. Would have liked to have known more background on Mr. Taylor as he was such a source of angst. I will definitely read the other two books in this series -- assuming that they aren't just a continuation of this story. Happy to have been turned-on to a new and promising author of thrillers!

It's an interesting story that starts in the present day with Samantha Bronwyn. As the story progresses it's discovered that Samantha's current problem has something to do with her mother's past. Once we find this out we jump to 1996 following her mother Clare down her path that leads us to Samantha's problem.
Some of the information that, to me, could have been shocking reveals are told to us and then we learn how that information came to be in later chapters. Usually in the flashback chapters with Clare.
We go between the past and the present to explain how and why we are where we are. It's well written and fun to read. Some parts I wish she wasn't that great at writing because holy shit vivid imagery was not something I needed for certain scenes.
As everything happens Samantha learns that she doesn't know her mom like she thought she did. When the book ends she still has learning to do and wonders if her mother will ever open up about everything that went down.
This was a fun and different read I bought the next book after finishing this.
