Tash Shardborn has this to say "In a very real sense, the Keister is the island. But in an equally, and more accurately, real sense the island is the island. Witness the cosmopolitan jumble of Floom, the aromatic mysticisms of the Garden of Smellemental Glee, the monumental juts and caverns of the Knobby Rumple... Behold dank rites and unspeakable atrocities as you scramble your way through the lichenous strew of Stan's Rug. Prance the loamy frolic of the Soul Patch. Wallow in the ichorous murk of the Imple Slew. Wonder what all those statues are about. Do some other stuff. Try not to get eaten." The Whole Hole - A Gadabout's Guide to Mutha Oith, Volume 01 Keister Island is the first in a series of guidebooks (that's what "Volume 01" means) designed to immerse the reader within and among the places, peeps, beasts, and happenings of the various realms of Mutha Oith. Join intrepid gadabout Toucanacondor Flaminguez as he tours Keister Island. You'll explore dozens of locales, meet hundreds of peeps, examine new religions, gawp in awe at wondrous magics, and run in terror from a bunsload of horrifying monstrosities. Here you'll investigate the Fundamental nature of all things, dabble in smellcasting at the Garden of Smellemental Glee, chug suds with Floom's elite, and marvel at the bottomless Keister of Gawd. There's new Holy Crap, new Edges and Hindrances, New PC species, new setting rules, and twenty pages of new monsters. Seriously, stop reading the back cover and just buy the goosin' thing already.

The Whole Hole A Gadabout Guide to Mutha Oith Vol 1 Keister Island Andy Hopp 9780985659103 Books Reviews
Of all the Kickstarter projects that I have missed, I most regret not getting in on this one. I have had the core book for Low Life for a while now and have always been extremely fond of the art. In fact the art is what first drew me to Low Life. Mr. Hopp's style runs from sublime to evocative. In the core book for this game the illustrations are all in sepia tones, which is pretty cool...however, in the Whole Hole we are treated to Mr. Hopp's unique use of colour. Beautiful work.
To say that this game supplement is just another pretty face would be an oversight, though. One of the really cool things about it is that all the game rules are in the back, rather than being interspersed with the text. The reason for this is pretty cool. It makes it so that this book can be enjoyed separately from using it as a game supplement. The text is fun and interesting and contains a wry humour. The world of Keister Island is as intricate as any from famous genre fiction. There is back story, history and a host of characters that add to this detail.
I got this book to use in my Low Life games, however I seldom read game books from cover to cover. I got it for the game stuff, and read it for the fiction and art. Even if you are not a game nerd, if you are a fan of completely unique worlds (and Mr. Hopp's world is the MOST unique world I have encountered in 30 years of gaming and 35 years of reading for fun) and really cool and intricate art you can still enjoy this book a great deal. Who knows, you may even end up playing the game and for 30 or so clams this book is a bargain.
This book has been a long time coming (Low Life came out in 2005). Whole Hole is an expansion to the Low Life game setting for Savage Worlds role playing game system. As a stand a lone book, it contains beautiful, lavish illustration and an in-depth look at a corner of his Mutha Oith setting. Conceptually it could be used as a source book for any setting, to use it with Low Life, would require a copy of one of the versions of Savage Worlds Deluxe (available in the full or explorer edition and in PDF) and a copy of Low Life - all of which are available currently through .
Part of what one comes away from this book with is a feeling of the vast size of the setting (Mutha Oith) and the potential for game play. I liken the concept more to a Sword and Sorcery Conanesque world (gone horribly wrong) than either High Fantasy or Sci-Fi / Apocalypse (which technically it is). Think Ralph Bakashi's Wizards (Old movie - look it up, its worth a view). The world is huge and varies enormously in its denizens, scenery, politics and environment across very small distances (a couple of hundred yorts... err miles). A hughe savage, untamed and unexplored world with pockets of "civilization" sprinkled here and there.
The book takes a medium dive into one such locale - Keister Island, a large Island (Australia?) that surrounds a huge, bottomless hole down into Mutha Oith. He provides lots of detail on three or four city states and an overview of dozens more. Even when he dives in, there is plenty of potential to make it your own.
The book also provides three new character races (Funguys, Flews and Snells) and starts fleshing out local religions and their impacts a bit deeper than was provided in Low Life. There is also included a substantial section on goods, he adds biological symbionts that can "upgrade" a character and a bestiary with some new toothsome dangers your party may run into on Keister Island.
Personally I think Andy stepped it up a notch with the art for this book. Color has added a whole new dimension to his art and the characters, peoples and places pop out of the page and bash the viewer on the noggy. It is a high quality hard back in the "Explorer Edition" format of Savage Worlds (5x7), with nice quality paper inside and a good binding holding it together.
A worthy edition to your game / book shelf!
If you have not yet explored the creative brain of Andy Hopp, you are missing out! The world of Mutha Oith is the craziest thing this side of Lovecraft... and every bit of it is wonderfully fun. Sure, it's the basis for a role playing game, but it's really so much more. Andy is a fantastic storyteller and artist, and has created such an incredibly expansive and deep world that it's a great read even if you're not playing a game.
This book is just jammed packed with setting material all in a convenient size. The writing is whimsical and informative. This is a must buy if you have the Low Life core book.
