Chavoret Jaruboon was personally responsible for executing 55 prison inmates in Thailand’s infamous prisons. As a boy, he wanted to be a teacher like his father, but his life changed when he chose one of the hardest jobs in the world. Honest and often disturbing – but told with surprising humour and emotion – 'The Last Executioner' is the remarkable story of a man who chose death as his vocation. 'The Last Executioner' is not for the faint hearted. It takes you right behind the bars of the infamous ‘Bangkok Hilton’ and into the shadows of its grim death chambers.

The Last Executioner Memoirs of Thailand last prison executioner eBook Chavoret Jaruboon Nicola Pierce

This memoir by Thailand's last executioner is one of the best books about the death penalty. It gives one a vivid idea on how execution by firing squad is done in Bang Kwan prison in Thailand by the very man who pulls the trigger himself. It begins with his early childhood and adolescent years, which in itself is a good read for it describes Thailand during the sixties at the height of the Vietnam War, then his stint as a jail guard, to being 'promoted' as escort to the condemned on their final walk, until finally being the man who actually pulls the trigger to end the convicts life. The execution procedure and case histories of the most notorious and notable felons that has 'come his way' are not the only subject that makes this book a great read, but also he affords the reader not only
about his life as jail guard and executioner, but what life is like for those unlucky enough to 'check in' at the 'Bangkok Hilton', Bang Kwan Prison. What really struck me as i read this book is after all the executions he participated and performed in he never lost his humanity, he loves his family and wants the best for his children, he loves rock and roll and is an Elvis fan, and would rather discuss music during conversations than talk about his work. Did he agree with the Death Penalty? he gives the impression that it was the law during that time but one he can gladly do without. The only thing left me 'hanging', was did he ever thought that he had executed an innocent person? If you are interested on the subject of the death penalty, either for or against, this is a must read. First hand accounts of actual executioners are very rare...

The Last Executioner Memoirs of Thailand last prison executioner eBook Chavoret Jaruboon Nicola Pierce Reviews

Wow! what an incredible book to read!
This is a true snap shot of the life of Bang Kwang executioner and his story which is a remarkable read.
His story is very unusual as the world has so few like this.

It is a book that has left it's imprint on my mind and I have gained insightful knowledge of Thailand's view of criminals that were given the death penalty
Better not to read this before bed. Pretty scary stuff when he starts talking about the executions.
I liked the first part about his early life but was waiting to get to the executions part which was the best part of this book.
Ater that he talks quit lenghtly about the prison riot that happened in '85, which I didn't find too interesting.
After that he mostly talks about how he feels about the prison system and guards and how things could be done differently.
All in all it was a nice read as an ebook.
Interesting read. But I wished he would get straight to the point and save his life history to the end of the book. We are of course interested in an executioners background and why one would get into that kinda work. At the same time it is good to have that option in the end.
Good book though.
It was a easy read frankly . Was very simple in its style and gave you a decent picture of what went on in the prison . The author is the executioner , and takes way to long to discuss that part of his story in detail. He talks much on the prison but with very few stories of the prisoners , guards etc. Cold have been much better. But I did like that it really did seem to be written by a amateur writer thus even his style added to the stories . HE was strangely detached from the victims whom he put to death. Made sure we all knew he was a very decent man. Though I have made a note never to visit!!

Thanks
MArk
The author here approaches his job as an executioner with very interesting insights. While being a believer in the death penalty, he does not feel the need to be insulting or mean to the people whom he is charged with carrrying out the ultimate punishment. The author is right that there are just some people who are pure evil, and have earned what they have received. The description of some of the crimes committed by these men (and women) are sometimes so disturbing that they're even hard to read about 30yrs after they took place. This book is also more than just descriptions of executions. He takes the reader on an interesting journey through his life, esp. how he was close to US servicemen during the Vietnam War. Again, very interesting and a good read.
Khun Chavoret and his translator did an excellent job of describing the era that this book covered, but also in discussing the arguments for and against the death penalty. Khun Chavoret was an ordinary man called upon to perform extraordinary duties. Duties that were opposed to his religious beliefs and the convictions of many other common men and women of his day.
A truly remarkable story by a very ordinary guy.
